2008 Health Requirements for the
IAOBA RiverSide AlpacaFest

BVD has become a point of interest and concern for alpaca breeders across the country. As IAOBA began planning for its 2008 show, we realized that the first thing we wanted to do was keep our alpacas as safe as possible. One of the ways that we feel we can help is by requiring that each alpaca entered in our show have a documented BVD VI or PCR negative test for admittance to our show facilities.
With alpacas coming from all across the country, we know that this will in no way guarantee that our show will be BVD free. But by requiring
BVD VI or PCR negative testing, we can deter exposure to any PI (Persistently Infected) alpacas while at our show.

After discussion with an Illinois Veterinarian who has experience with testing alpacas for BVD, we have determined that, there will be no predetermined time limitations on this test. It will not have to be done within 30 days of our show.
For example: If you have alpacas that you are entering in a previous show and they have been tested
BVD VI or PCR Negative, those test results will be sufficient for our show entry. Remember that we are only attempting to deter PI alpacas from entering the show. Once an alpaca has been determined to be BVD VI or PCR Negative, they are NOT a PI and CANNOT become a PI at a later date. Granted, they can possibly be exposed to the virus after testing and become infected with the active virus. However, this will run it's course and that alpaca will build immunities of their own. So hopefully this will aid breeders in keeping testing costs to a minimum and within their show budgets.

BVD Testing for the 2008 IAOBA RiverSide AlpacaFest

  • We will require BVD VI or PCR Negative testing on ALL alpacas (not just juvies and yearlings) to enter show - the negative results are required to be listed on the CVI.
  • Schedule your vet early for coming out to do your BVD VI or PCR testing. You should allow at least three (3) weeks for test results to come back from the lab.
  • The BVD information must have individual alpaca ARI names and microchip # listed on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection indicating BVD VI or PCR negative.
  • Once again…there is no time frame for date of this testing for our show. (Once a Negative PI - can never become one.) Please realize, this will NOT make our show a guaranteed BVD-Free environment, we are only attempting to deter PI animals from entering our show facilities.
  • BVD VI or PCR testing requires approximately 4cc blood in a purple top tube (Except U of I - see below). Mark tube with alpaca name and chip # or ARI #
  • Send to lab
  • Allow at least 3 weeks for testing results
  • Vet will put results on your CVI with date test was done.
